Assault Air Runner Vs Trueform - Over the past few years, I've seen more and more videos of fitness goers, weekend warriors, and high-performance athletes running on curved treadmills during training. At first glance, the concave device looks like a novelty item that simply prevents people from falling off the back of a treadmill. New product ideas come to market so fast and often these days that I actively avoid being an early adopter of anything. I'm late to social media. I didn't get a smartphone right away. I have never worn yoga pants or related clothing. But I enjoy seeing other people tinker with new exercise products and technologies while trying to give the appearance of technological savvy and innovation. I'm still kicking myself for not picking up $300 worth of bitcoin when a friend told me about it four years ago, but these oversights are rare.

My first personal experience with the curved treadmill market came just a few months ago at the urging of my friend Chris Wickus, Director of Training and Education at Drive 495 in New York City. Chris was aware of my background in sprints and general running mechanics and wanted to get my take on the technology. The treadmill currently used in Drive 495 is the TrueForm Runner. It was a good machine to start with for reasons I will explain later in this article. My first few attempts to run it on TrueForm were awkward to say the least. Regardless of what different companies tell you, running on any type of treadmill is not like running on solid ground. It's like riding a stationary bike as opposed to an actual bike. It provides a relatively acceptable means of achieving something similar, but is truly unique and unique to itself. The full experience won't transfer to the actual run, but there are definitely some unique elements that will transfer when you run on solid ground again. For ease of discussion, I will refer to curved hand treadmills as CMT in the rest of this article.

One of the things you often hear from companies that manufacture curved wrist treadmills (CMTs) is that their product will "make you a better runner" or "put you in a better position to run more efficiently." My personal experience shows that such claims are both incorrect and irresponsible. No amount of equipment I've ever seen makes a person a better runner, including shoes, orthotics, compression garments, or wearable technology. Good training and careful instruction delivered at the right pace over time can help people become better runners, whether they run on grass, synthetic surfaces, trails or treadmills. I have seen many examples of people floundering with these CMTs only to earn a reputation as a "failed video" because there was no competent trainer present to correct their technique and protect them. Fortunately, the combination of an experienced trainer and CMT can yield some positive results.

In the case of a motorized treadmill, the runner must select his running speed using the control panel to increase the speed of the motor that drives the treadmill. The athlete's limbs essentially follow the pace set by the treadmill. While this may seem like a simple tool to adjust training speed, the result may not match the individual's output on that particular day. Therefore, a motorized treadmill will ultimately dictate the mechanics, not the athlete. If the speed is set incorrectly, the treadmill can actually promote and perpetuate inefficient mechanics and bad habits.

With CMT, the runner not only determines the speed of the treadmill at impact by increasing step speed and ground forces, but also by advancing to the front of the treadmill, where the steepness of the arc increases. This forward translation requires the athlete to increase stride velocity and vertical ground force production to maintain a position near the front end of the treadmill. Alternatively, when an athlete "downshifts," they pull back into the center or recess of the treadmill, where they can maintain a slower running speed or walking pace. After a few sessions, the athlete can easily switch between high and low speed running in seconds.

My biggest gripe when using a motorized treadmill for my personal pace or when prescribing athlete medication was that I had to manually adjust the belt speed between each interval run. If I wanted to do run-walk or sprint-jog intervals, adjusting the belt speed was not only annoying, but sometimes dangerous. Going from running at relatively high speed to finding and pressing the button to slow down the belt was always uncertain. In many cases, I simply jumped up and circled the belt, put my feet on the side rails and stood out during the rest period. This contrast between running at higher speeds and standing was not optimal and I could feel my legs stiffening during the workout. I wanted a smoother transition between the running portion of my training and the recovery walk.

Curved hand treadmills allow you to naturally adjust your running speed by simply slowing down your running pace and returning to the center of the curved deck. Running or walking in the middle of the treadmill is very easy. With a little practice, both the top and bottom ends of the gears are easily accessible without fiddling with dashboard buttons.

As mentioned earlier, motorized treadmills determine an individual's running speed. The athlete adjusts the speed of the belt and follows the machine. Essentially, the athlete brakes significantly at each contact with the ground, and then the treadmill moves the leg backwards at a set speed. All the athlete needs to do is maintain vertical hip height and engage in leg recovery with each step. It's very different from actual cross country running. If an athlete really exerts a similar combination of strength and muscle on a motorized treadmill as they do cross-country running, they would shoot from the front of the treadmill.

When I ran on each CMT, I felt noticeable fatigue in my hamstrings towards the end of the workout, and there were slight differences between brands. When I jumped off the treadmill and ran on solid ground, it felt like my hamstrings were over-activated and running was very easy, if not automatic. With CMTs, you have to deliver a power combination that I think is more akin to running above ground. This employment agreement is required to maintain your position on the CMT Board. Although not exactly similar to cross-country running, CMT running at higher speeds causes more tendon loss and is comparable to vertical weight-bearing running. It's not a replacement for overground running, but it can be used to provide the best possible alternative to traditional running in bad weather or when you can't get to a track or training ground.

For athletes and coaches looking to develop and refine frontal mechanics for sprint applications, CMT can be a useful quality improvement tool when outdoor sprint opportunities are limited. The speed of the belt is determined by the athlete's physical ability, technical performance and position on the treadmill. During a session, it may take time to reach a near-maximal sprint position in very short bursts (3-5 seconds) that are inherently intense. Adequate rest breaks—which can be as little as 2-3 minutes between efforts—are necessary to maintain multi-rep sprint quality. Running at higher speeds with proper front mechanics can be beneficial on many levels, including:

Once an athlete develops the technical and neuromuscular skills to maximize their sprint training effort on CMT, they unlock a wide range of training speed, general fitness, and specific energy system-based attributes.

When you look at the CMT offerings on the market, the average person might think that all CMTs are created equal. A closer look at the treadmills revealed that the dimensions of these machines differ subtly, as evidenced by the numbers in Table 1. The difference in specifications of each machine gives a slightly different experience, and this can be important depending on the size, ability or intended use of the end user. . Below I describe my experiences with four different brands of CMT, in order of sampling.
